Vincenzo Cohen is an Italian artist involved in Nature Conservation. He was born in  Switzerland and he has a classicist background. In 2002 he graduated in Fine Arts and in 2005 he held his first Solo Exhibition. In 2007 he received a second master’s degree in Archaeology. Currently he works as Higher Education Teacher. His production is eclectic and consists in the use of different techniques and styles. He has travelled through many countries of Africa and Midle East to study wildlife and get inspiration for his art production. Much of his work consists in reworking of life experiences through an expressionist language and by means of photography. He participates in the International Yearbook of Contemporary Art 2021 by Mondadori Store.

The theme of marine nature stems from the need to express own sense of belonging to the sea. In the artist imaginary the marine world is closely linked to the image of water as symbol of intrauterine reunion with the mother. The sea calls to mind memories of childhood, strengthens family ties, recalls the world of a lost naivety. The sea water erodes past memories, through a slow process of weathering. Marine elements like stones, seashells and sand represent the result of this process of mind erosion and biological sedimentation. The age of lost innocence back to the conscious
mind through the recall of the original aquatic world. The artistic technique consists in creating a materical mixture made with plaster, sand, organic sediments like shells and inorganic substance of volcanic origin deposited on sea beds and ocean floor such as pumice stone and fine clay.

The artwork is realized with materials of marine origin (sand, shells, pumice stone), the basic mixture is made with plaster, glue and sand. The surface is painted with oil with additional final fixing paint that gives shine.

Sedimentation talks about the imaginary journey in the history of the Mediterranean. The artist comes from a southern town where the presence of the sea influences the way to feel nature and perception of reality. Historically, the theme of the sea landscape (last stage in the artist’s production), expresses the sense of belonging to the ancestral background of the southern Italy, mindful of a process of historical cultural stratification having its epicenter in the Mediterranean area. The study on marine nature describes this process of memories erosion that, resurfacing across the time from history in the form of marine concretions and sedimentations, focus on the theme of the sea, as a way of crossing, source of trade and crossroads of peoples.

“Epimetheus” from the Greek Ἐπιμηθεύς (the one who sees behind) is a work realized in 2001 and is part, together with the “Prometheus”, of the first collection of oil paintings, entitled “Twilight”. The work represents the thinker Epimetheus portrayed posing reflectively to indicate the introspective character. The swirling brushstrokes give freshness and airiness to the work and symbolize the thoughts that, escaping from the body, propagate in the surrounding atmosphere, forming spiral motifs and smoke circles, allusion of the prescient spirit and the innate wisdom of the titan.

The artwork represents Lorenzo de Medici, illustrious Italian patron of the
Renaissance. The work is part of the collection “Portraits in red and grey” produced between 2014 and 2021. The collection intends to show historical figures in the light of their cultural context. The source of inspiration borns from the sculpture in moving from three-dimensional to two-dimensional representation. The character represented stands as a symbol of the art and free thinking. It is an isolated figure in a neutral background, absorbed in an hermetic expression, to emphasize the need for psychological introspection.

The work represents the Cretan shepherd Magnes, from which, according to Pliny the Elder , derives the word “magnetism”. In his “Naturalis historia” he tells that this shepherd walking on Mount Ida accidentally discovered the properties of the magnetite when his iron stick and the nails of his shoes were suddenly attracted by magnetite rocks. The work represents the shepherd with luminous and magnetic beams coming out of the eyes, symbolizing a force that is released.
