My work explores the intersect between pleasure and pain and by
combining contrasting materials within familiar objects, I investigate this
tension as it manifests both psychologically and physically.
My sculptural pieces explore this concept through the manipulation of
colour, texture and material characteristics within each. I seek to create a
duality in each piece by manipulating their material and structural
characteristics to evoke strong feelings of attraction and repulsion, while
exploring how a change in these characteristics affects the way the object
is perceived. This manipulation is done through the addition or removal of
the functional (and comforting) aspect in each piece, which results in a
sensory effect of discomfort, uneasiness and ambiguity.
My drawings depict familiar objects, which have been made unfamiliar
through the addition or removal of comfortable features. They are related to
the constructed objects and can also be viewed as separate constructions.
They function as preparatory work for my sculptures and through the
absence of the body, these pieces gain a certain ambiguity which provoke
conflicting emotional reactions. I hope that this, as seen in my work evokes
strong feelings of interest, while also causing the viewer to hesitate
simultaneously.
Gabrielle Moore is a Barbadian artist, born in 1995. She graduated from the
Bachelors of Fine Arts program at the Barbados Community College in 2017 and
has taken part in a number of local group exhibitions since then. Gabrielle’s work
mainly consist of 3 dimensional assemblages, with her choice of medium
depending on her area of concentration and what her work calls for at a particular
time.
By manipulating the material and structural characteristics of familiar objects
found within the home, she seeks to examine the intersect between pleasure and
pain as it manifests both psychologically and physically. Gabrielle aims to create a
sense of ambiguity, while looking at how a change in the characteristics of these
objects affects the way it is perceived.
